Quake 4????

okay, well i just got quake 4 and i installed it. i opened it and went to single player and all, then when the game started, the game was soooo slow. it went from one screen to another. it just kept skipping. i restarted my computer, and it still does the same. it doesnt run smoothly. whats wrong? i really want to play. any help please? im using a new laptop. theres enough room and all. i really need help
