metaphor. similes use like or as.the main part you need to look at is, "Ed became a meek little rabbit". and that's a metaphor, the rest is just a subordinate clause adding on to the metaphor. the "as" in this sentence is describing when he became a meek little rabit, wich is not how "as" functions in a smile.
